Aging By The Decade
For many, skin changes are the first noticeable signs of aging. How fast we visibly age depends on a number of factors including genetics, sun exposure, diet, and lifestyle choices. Here is a review of the basic signs of aging that occur by decade as well as tips to help slow down the process.
The visible signs of aging can start as early as our late teens and twenties. Common changes include increased pigmentation as well as wrinkles that occur with expression. Pigmentary changes occur due to simulation of melanocytes from ultraviolet radiation, while wrinkles occur due to a decreased production of collagen.
During the 30s and 40s photo(sun) damage from the sun becomes more prominent in the form of worsening hyperpigmentation and deeper lines. You may also notice a duller skin tone and thinner, less supple skin. These changes occur due to a multitude of reasons including a decreased production of collagen and elastin, a decreased function of the skin repair mechanisms as well as a decreased amount of hyaluronic acid.
In the 50s and 60s, the skin may have an additional factor that causes even more changes in the skin: Menopause! This is often noted by drier, dull skin caused by decreased oil production. In addition, the continued decreased production of collagen and elastin often leads to deeper wrinkles which can be apparent at rest. Furthermore, volume loss due to shrinking fat pads and changes of the underlying bony support can lead to a more sunken appearance.
Thankfully, creating a good skincare routine can help prevent and delay some of these changes.
Here is what we recommend:
-Using a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater daily.
-Using mild gentle cleanser that will not strip the skin and helps restore its hydration.
-Using products that contain quality ingredients that address the multiple changes associated with aging including:
Antioxidants
Hyaluronic Acid
Peptides
Bakuchiol
All of these can be found in the L2S Bakuchiol +Peptide Moisturizer!
