Plant-Derived Antioxidants & Skin Care
Natural and plant-derived substances have traditionally been used in skin care for centuries. These compounds not only promote skin health, but also protect the skin against various harmful factors, including ultraviolet radiation and free radicals. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage skin cells by disturbing defense and restoration processes and is one of the major causes of skin aging.
A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper skin function. Plants are a rich source of natural antioxidants and they not only have the ability to scavenge free radicals, but they also support the defense and regenerative mechanisms of the skin. Although the skin has some natural defense mechanisms against free radicals, it is prone to overload when free radicals are produced in excessive amounts. Daily sources of free radicals include UV light, visible light, blue light from electronic devices, as well as chemical compounds including pesticides, pollution, household chemicals, and cigarette smoke.
While you cannot avoid free radicals completely, you can add antioxidants into your diet and skin-care regimen to help slow the damaging effects that free radicals have on our skin and body.
